On July 11th, just a few days before my birthday, I decided to deactivate both of my Instagram accounts. I wanted to focus on the changes that were happening in my life and most importantly, to focus on my mental health.
I'll be honest - it was getting way too much to be on instagram for hours a day. It was starting to bother my mental health. Taking a break helped a lot but so did folklore by Taylor.
Also, here is a friendly reminder to check your phone to see how much you've been using social media.
Coming from personal experience, I always felt like social media had such a big impact on our lives.
At this point, I think we all agree that everyone who is active on their social media accounts are there to share the highlights of their life. Their happiest moments, their biggest accomplishments, their goals and progress, and literally anything aesthetic and pretty.
This is honestly all so great. We all do it. There is literally nothing wrong with it.
My problem isn't with what we share but with how we feel when we see hundreds and thousands of people's highlights EVERY SINGLE DAY. This could be so motivating at times but also so draining. In my case, when I wanted to deactivate my accounts, I was honestly just done with seeing everyone else's "highlights" because I needed to pick up my head from my phone and just focus on myself.
By the way, when was the last time you took a break?
A week ago? A month ago? Few months ago? Never took one? Well, go and deactivate your Instagram temporarily or just delete the app off your phone for literally two days, and you can thank me later. Or don't. But just take that break. You need it and you DESERVE it.
Not only it drains our mental health but it also wastes our time when we don't set limits for ourselves. This was one of the biggest reasons why I wanted to take a break.
I cannot even begin to tell you the amount of times where I couldn't stop scrolling on Instagram or TikTok and I check the time to find out hours have passed without me even noticing. I'm not even going to begin talking about TikTok more than just that because if you have the app, you know that the app is literally like a damn drug.
Personally, I want to make it a routine to take two-three days out of the month where I don't go on social media. Even if I don't feel the need to "take a break" I think it's good to just let our phones down to enjoy the present moment.
Honestly, with corona, I've realized how fast time actually goes, and I just don't want it to be wasted with hours on Instagram or TikTok.
With that being said, if you haven't taken a break from social media in a hot minute, please do so. You'll get to focus on yourself and feel glad that you took a break.
